Take a Ride Down Route 66

The Warren County Historical Society invites the public to get its kicks on Route 66 during an upcoming program exploring the legendary highway from Chicago to San Bernardino.

The virtual journey, presented by Karl Kindt, will trace the famed road often called the “Main Street of America,” highlighting the communities, roadside landmarks, and historic remnants that continue to draw travelers and history enthusiasts.

Route 66 is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026, marking a century since the legendary highway received its numerical designation on Nov. 11, 1926. The route became one of the nation’s best-known highways, linking communities along a roughly 2,400-mile stretch from Chicago to Santa Monica and helping define American road travel. Although the road was eventually replaced in many places by interstate highways, sections of the old route remain preserved through historic districts, museums, vintage motels, service stations, and roadside attractions.

Kindt’s presentation will take audience members on a virtual drive along the historic route, offering a look at what remains to enjoy today and why Route 66 continues to hold a special place in American travel history.

The free program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August. 20, at the History Museum, 102 West Walton St., Warrenton. The event is hosted by the Warren County Historical Society.
